5 Things Every Plumber’s Website Needs

You don’t need a 20-page website with parallax scrolling and a video background. You really don’t. What you need is a site that does one job well: turn visitors into customers. Here are the five plumber website essentials that actually matter.

Most plumbers we speak to think getting a website means spending thousands on something complicated. It doesn’t. The best tradesman websites are simple, fast, and built around what customers actually want to know before they pick up the phone.

We’ve built websites for plumbers, electricians, builders and just about every trade going. And the ones that generate the most enquiries all have these five things in common.

1

Clear Contact Information

This sounds obvious, but you’d be amazed how many tradesman websites bury their phone number three clicks deep. Your phone number should be visible on every single page — ideally in the header where it’s impossible to miss.

On mobile, it needs to be a click-to-call link. Someone with a leaking pipe at 10pm isn’t going to copy and paste your number into their dialler. They want to tap it and call you. Make it embarrassingly easy to get in touch.

Beyond the phone number, include:

Quick test: Open your website on your phone. Can you call or message the business within 5 seconds of landing on any page? If not, you’re losing enquiries.

2

Your Services and Areas

Customers need to know two things straight away: do you do what they need, and do you cover their area? Don’t make them guess.

List your services clearly. Not just “plumbing services” — be specific. Boiler installations. Emergency call-outs. Bathroom fitting. Radiator replacements. Unvented cylinder work. Power flushing. The more specific you are, the more confident a customer feels about ringing you.

This is also what Google indexes. When someone in Swindon searches “emergency plumber near me,” Google needs to see those words on your site. Mention the towns and areas you cover explicitly. Don’t just say “we cover the local area” — list the actual places. Swindon, Chippenham, Marlborough, Devizes. Whatever your patch is, spell it out.

Each service should ideally have its own section or page. This gives Google more content to index and gives customers a clear picture of what you offer. A short paragraph explaining what’s involved, what it costs roughly, and how long it takes is more than enough.

3

Photos of Your Actual Work

Stock images of smiling models holding spanners fool absolutely nobody. Customers can spot them a mile off, and they make your website look generic and untrustworthy.

What actually works? Before-and-after photos of real jobs you’ve done. A bathroom ripped out and refitted. A new boiler installed neatly with tidy pipework. An underfloor heating system laid out properly. These photos build trust in a way that no amount of fancy copywriting ever will.

You don’t need a professional photographer. Phone photos work perfectly well as long as the lighting is decent and the area is tidy. Get into the habit of snapping a photo before you start a job and another when it’s finished. Build up a library over a few weeks and you’ll have plenty of content for your website.

Top tip: Take photos in landscape mode with good natural light. Clean up the work area first. A before-and-after pair of a grotty bathroom turned into something smart is worth more than any sales pitch.

4

Reviews and Testimonials

Social proof is the single most powerful thing on your website. When a potential customer is deciding between you and three other plumbers they found on Google, reviews are what tips the balance.

If you’ve got Google reviews (and you should), embed them directly on your website. Most website builders make this straightforward, and there are simple widgets that pull in your latest reviews automatically.

If you’re just starting out and haven’t built up Google reviews yet, ask a few recent customers for a quote you can use on your site. A real name, the job that was done, and a couple of sentences about the experience — that’s gold. Even five or six solid testimonials make a massive difference.

The key is authenticity. Short, specific reviews from real people (“Fixed our boiler on a Sunday evening, no call-out charge, brilliant service”) are far more convincing than vague five-star praise. Let your customers do the selling for you.

5

Fast Loading and Mobile-Friendly

Here’s a stat that should matter to every tradesman: over 60% of your website visitors are on their phone. Not sitting at a desk — standing in their kitchen with water dripping from the ceiling, searching for someone who can help right now.

If your site takes five seconds to load, they’re gone. They’ve already tapped the next result on Google and called someone else. Speed matters more than how your site looks.

A mobile-friendly website isn’t a nice-to-have — it’s the bare minimum. Your text needs to be readable without zooming. Your phone number needs to be tappable. Your contact form needs to work with a thumb on a small screen. Navigation needs to be simple and obvious.

Google also ranks mobile-friendly, fast-loading sites higher in search results. So this isn’t just about user experience — it directly affects whether customers find you in the first place.

How to check: Search for “PageSpeed Insights” on Google and type in your website address. It’ll give you a score out of 100 and tell you exactly what’s slowing things down.

What You Don’t Need

Just as important as knowing what to include is knowing what to leave out. These things sound impressive in a sales pitch from a web designer, but they won’t get you a single extra job:

Every feature you add is something that can break, slow your site down, or distract visitors from doing the one thing you want them to do: contact you. Keep it simple. A clean, fast, informative website that makes it easy to get in touch will outperform a flashy one every time.

The best plumber websites we’ve built are three to five pages. Home, services, gallery, about, contact. That’s it. No fluff, no filler. Just the information a customer needs to decide you’re the right person for the job — and then a big, obvious way to reach you.

Your website doesn’t need to win design awards. It needs to ring your phone. Focus on these five essentials, strip out everything else, and you’ll have a site that works harder than most of your competitors’.
